Dodendal, Valley of Dreams
a novel by Jim Holmgren
Have you wondered what life will be like in the future? Will it be like the dystopian novels 1984 and Brave New World? Or will it be something more multi-faceted – more complicated? Dodendal, Valley of Dreams, takes you into the year 2076 during the Tricentennial celebrations. The Corporation has “rescued” America from the extreme dysfunction of past governments. It has ended the cycle of wars that had sucked the life-blood out of the United States and is running the Incorporated States of America like a business.
Many Americans are grateful. Some realize what they have given up. There are those who are dissatisfied, especially during this reflective time in their history. And there are those who find the courage to act on their discontent.
This speculative novel delves into future issues like mandatory “transponder” implants and the changing relationship between the sexes. It also explores themes like the profound influence of music and dreams on the human soul.
Dodendal, Valley of Dreams, is set in the scenic Mid-Hudson Valley of New York. If you are familiar with this area, you may recognize some of the locations from present-day Poughkeepsie, Beacon, Rhinebeck, Millbrook and the Hudson Highlands. And you may recognize the historic, enchanted valley of Dodendal. This tale projects into the future, drawing on the long and rich history of the Mid-Hudson Valley.
